Appliances Using Hard Water Pictures of household items damaged by Limescale due to hard water (From different properties)

Hard Water contains Calcium.

Calcium, when looked at underneath a microscope, looks like a jagged snowflake. When calcium is heated, the calcium particles stick together like a jigsaw. This in turn builds up and becomes limescale on your household appliances.

Limescale build up is not only unsightly and very hard to clean off your surfaces/shower screens, it can cause your household items not to work as efficiently as they should and even cause them to break down – Which is costly when you have to start replacing Boilers, Kettles, Coffee Machines, Washing Machines, Dish Washers, Pipes, Showers, Taps and any other element that heats water, or uses hot water.

The photos below are of limescale damage that you can see in kettles, taps and showers – imagine what it is doing internally to your boiler, washing machine or dishwasher? The more costly items to replace if they break down.

Each year, the pipes in your home build a layer of limescale, on top of previous layers on limescale, causing a limescale wall. This in turn, not only means it takes longer for the room to heat up during the colder months as the heat has to penetrate through the limescale wall, it also makes your boiler work harder and for longer. If your boiler is on for longer, not only can it shorten its life and make it work harder, but the longer your boiler is on, the larger your energy bills will be. If there was no limescale in the pipes, the room would heat up quicker, the boiler would be on for less time. Not to mention that if you don’t have limescale protection before your boiler, the limescale can build up internally causing the boiler to break down.

According to Google, (when asked) what time of year do boilers break down the most? The answer “with a chunky 15.56%, most boiler repairs and breakdowns happen in January of each year.” This is because of the cold weather. Here in the UK, the coldest of weather is normally at the beginning of the year. This is when boilers are on the most.

Fear not though – you can protect your home and appliances against Limescale build up. All you need, is a water softener. Water softeners REMOVE calcium from the incoming main protecting your whole home and all of your appliances. Water Softeners also (over time) can remove existing limescale build-up which could make your home more efficient.

Not only will a water softener protect your household appliances against limescale build up, but you will also save money on your everyday products. Bubbles, Soap, Shampoo, Detergents lather up quicker with soft water therefore you don't need to use as much or as often - Hence you will be buying them less often saving you money. You also may find that you are buying less cleaning products and that cleaning your home and appliances will be quicker and easier.

If you are buying less household items, you will also be cutting down on your plastic bottles which will help protect our planet.
Please note, a water softener is NOT the same as a water conditioner, and a water conditioner is NOT a water softener. A water conditioner does NOT remove calcium. They treat the calcium in the water to stop/slow limescale build up. You will still be using the same amount of household items as the calcium is still present in the water. However, a conditioner is better than nothing if a water softener is out of budget or if you don’t have the room. We would recommend the Life Science Sentry, which can be found on our website by searching for Sentry.
